NCAA's decision on penalties for Ohio State will be revealed Tuesday

Nearly one year after the first announcement of rules violations by Ohio State football players, the school and former coach Jim Tressel will receive their punishment from the NCAA.

Athletic director Gene Smith confirmed to The Associated Press an announcement Tuesday is planned for 3 p.m. ET.

On Dec. 23 of last year, Terrelle Pryor and four other players were suspended five games for receiving impermissible benefits. They all were allowed to play in the team's Sugar Bowl defeat of Arkansas before serving their penalties. Pryor left school during the summer and entered the NFL's supplemental draft.

Tressel was later found to have lied to the NCAA about his knowledge of the violations. He resigned his position on May 30.

Further violations were uncovered this fall with players being found to have received extra benefits from a booster and been overpaid during summer employment.

Running back Dan Herron and wide receiver DeVier Posey, who were already suspended five games last December, were forced to sit out an additional one and five games, respectively.

In addition to vacating its 12 wins in the 2010 season, the school has already imposed two year of probation and a reduction of five scholarships over a three-year period. The NCAA can accept those penalties or add more sanctions.

Tressel will also learn whether he will receive a show-cause penalty for his wrongdoing. In a similar case, former Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl received a three-year sanction for lying to NCAA investigators.
