A storm is coming, Mr. Wayne. And it apparently will be hoisting an Occupy Gotham sign.
The official “Dark Knight Rises” trailer landed Monday at Apple.com (and other points both legal and bootlegged), as the Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy will apparently go out not only with a bang, but also with a purred warning, a batpod’s roar and a low villainous grunt.
“Dark Knight” flash-forwards eight years ahead from where we last left Bruce Wayne. And joining the fray is Anne Hathaway as sometie-Catsuited Selina Kyle, who meows in Wayne’s ear: “You think this is going to last. There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all going to wonder how you ever thought how you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.”
Selina, we’re guessing, is identifying with the 99 percent here.
Last go-round, of course, Batman squared off against Heath Ledger’s deliciously twisted Joker (which won Ledger a posthumous acting Oscar). This time, it’s Wayne vs. Bane — the villain of more recent vintage known as “the Man Who Broke the Bat” (the Knightfall arc that was both spine-tingler and back-breaker).
As the brilliant, beastly Bane, Thomas Hardy mumbles with menace and looms as worthy foil.
(Speaking of: We’re both riveted, and troubled, by the football-game detonation shot at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field. Nice touches: Steeler receiver “Hines Ward” scoring for the Gotham Rogues, and the kicker whose jersey apparently bears the name of Pittsburgh Mayor Luke “Ravenstahl.” Less-nice touches: The thin-looking CGI of the background effects as the field crumbles like an aging offensive line.)
So we’ve got lingering shots of Hardy and lingering words of Michael Caine, as well as flashes of Marion Cotillard (yet more masquerade scenes) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Hail, hail, the “Inception” gang’s all here.
And as Bale makes his swan song in the Batsuit, we’re left to ponder: Once Bane’s done his deeds, will a different Dark Knight rise in crumbling Gotham.
From Batman to ousted Commissioner Gordon to the city itself, the crystalline lyric hangs in the gunmetal-grey air:
Is this the twilight’s last gleaming?
